Ways to use your clips

Cut music, shorten recordings, and save audio clips

Keep the part you need from a song, voice memo, or podcast. Shorter clips are easier to share and reuse.

Trim a song for a ringtone

Use the MP3 cutter to save a chorus or another short section of a song. Export MP3 or M4A, then follow your phone’s steps to set it as a ringtone.

Shorten voice recordings

Cut silence or setup time from the beginning and end of a voice memo, leaving only the recording you want to keep.

Cut music and sound effects

Extract a short section of background music or a sound effect for a video, presentation, or livestream.

Save meeting and lecture highlights

Trim a long recording down to a key discussion or explanation, ready to save or share with colleagues.

Create podcast clips

Clip a highlight from an episode for a preview. To save several excerpts, select and export each section separately.

Trim audio before transcription

If you only need a transcript of one section, cut that audio first and upload the shorter clip to Audio to Text.

Trimming tips

Fine-tune your audio selection before you export

Drag the handles to select a clip, then use the time fields and playback controls to check exactly where it starts and ends.

  • Adjust times in 0.1-second steps

Focus a waveform handle and press the left or right arrow key to move it by 0.1 seconds, or hold Shift for 1-second steps. You can also type a time such as 1:05.5.

  • Keep the source quality

The output format defaults to the source format when supported. For compatible files, keeping the same format, original quality, and sample rate allows export without re-encoding.

  • Preview the selected audio

“Preview selection” plays only the section you have chosen and stops at the end point. Listen for clean starts and endings before exporting.

Questions and answers

Audio trimmer FAQ

Is this online audio trimmer free?

Yes. You can trim audio and download your clip for free with NowText. No registration or login is required. Each file can be up to 1GB.

Can I trim MP3, WAV, M4A, and other audio formats?

Yes. The audio trimmer accepts MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, FLAC, OGG, OPUS, WMA, AIFF, AMR, and other common audio formats. You can also upload MP4 or MOV videos to cut and export their audio.

How precisely can I select the start and end times?

You can set the selection in 0.1-second increments. Drag the waveform handles, use the arrow keys to fine-tune them, or type times directly into the start and end fields. Export boundaries can vary with the source codec when copying audio without re-encoding.

Can I cut MP3 audio without losing quality?

For compatible MP3 files, keep MP3 as the output format, select “Keep original quality”, and leave the sample rate unchanged to avoid re-encoding. Changing formats, bitrate, or sample rate can re-encode the audio; converting to a lossy format may reduce quality.

What is the maximum audio file size?

Each file can be up to 1GB. Waveforms for long recordings are generated progressively, so you can start selecting a clip while the waveform is still loading.

Why is the audio waveform missing?

The waveform loads progressively, and long files take more time. If your browser cannot decode the file or read its audio data, a message will explain that the waveform is unavailable. You can still enter start and end times to trim the file.

Can I trim audio on my phone?

Yes. Open this page in your mobile browser, select a saved audio file, and drag the handles or enter start and end times. Preview and download your clip without installing an app.

How do I cut a song for an iPhone ringtone?

Select a clip of 30 seconds or less and export it as M4A. You can then import the downloaded audio into GarageBand on your iPhone and export it as a ringtone. Downloading an M4A file alone does not set it as your ringtone.

Can I remove audio from the middle or join clips?

This tool exports one continuous selection at a time. It does not remove a middle section while joining the remaining audio, or merge multiple clips. To split a recording into separate files, trim and download each section individually.

How can I get help with an audio trimming problem?

Email [email protected] or send feedback using the button below. Include the file format and what happened so we can help.

How do I trim an MP3 file online?

Choose your MP3 file, select the section to keep using the waveform or time fields, and preview it. Leave MP3 selected as the output format, click “Trim and export”, then download the finished clip.
